This is a question I hear all the time:
“I’d love to launch my own kidswear brand… but I don’t have a fashion degree. Is that even possible?”
My answer: absolutely, yes.
Some of the most successful kidswear founders I’ve met and studied had no formal fashion background. What they did have was passion, vision, and the willingness to do the work—AND seek the right help.
Let’s dive into what really matters (and what doesn’t) when it comes to starting your own brand.
What Really Matters: Your Vision and Drive
If you’ve felt that spark inside you—the one that keeps whispering “I need to bring this idea to life”—that’s your greatest asset.
Successful brand founders share some common traits, regardless of their backgrounds:
-
Passion and empathy. They truly care about solving a problem or filling a gap for parents and kids.
-
Problem-solving. They see a need in the market and create thoughtful solutions.
-
Resilience. They keep going when challenges come up (because they will).
-
Willingness to learn. They don’t shy away from what they don’t know—they seek resources, guidance, and support.
Notice how “fashion degree” didn’t make the list? That’s because your role as a founder is not to do everything yourself—it’s to bring the vision, the spark, and the persistence to see it through.
The Skills You Don’t Need to Master (But Will Oversee)
Here’s the truth: building a kidswear brand involves many technical skills—fashion design, pattern-making, grading, fabric sourcing, branding, content creation, packaging, and more.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need to master all of them yourself. In fact, trying to do everything alone often leads to burnout, mistakes, and giving up too soon.
Your job isn’t to become a designer, manufacturer, or marketer overnight. Your job is to know your vision clearly, then hire or collaborate with professionals who can translate that vision into reality.
Think of yourself as the creative director of your brand. You guide the vision, and you bring the right people on board to make it happen.

Real-Life Proof: Moms Who Made It Happen
Many inspiring kidswear brands were founded by moms who had no fashion background at all. They simply had an idea, a passion, and a determination to create something better for their kids—and they went for it.
✨ Suhana Ab from Maison Q: She launched a kids fashion brand after becoming a mom, with no (public) fashion training. Her communication & editorial skills helped her curate rather than “invent” from scratch. She gradually built stockists across Singapore and Malaysia. Shows you don’t need to start as a designer — strong taste, curation, and business sense can take you far. Useful for moms who are creative but not formally trained.
✨ Meredith from LittleSleepies founded her brand after seeing a gap in functional, comfortable sleepwear that also looked nice. Research &
testing of fabrics played a big part. If you start by solving a problem, by experimenting and refining, you don’t need to start as a polished designer. You learn in the process.
✨Gugguu was co-founded by two sisters, Anne Valli & Miia Riekki, who as mothers saw things “always being wrong” in the kids’ clothing they
bought. They didn’t come from textile/fashion education; they say they had no prior experience in the textile industry. They knew what children needed and what they wanted for them — quality,
comfort, durability, etc. This resonates strongly with the “mom starting from observing a gap + learning through doing” path.
Countless other moms have done the same, each starting exactly where you are now: with an idea and a dream.
What do they all have in common? Not degrees, not years of technical experience—just the courage to begin and the persistence to keep learning along the way.
You Can Do This Too
If you’re reading this and doubting whether you “have what it takes,” I want you to know: you do. You don’t need to know everything today. You just need to take the first step and keep moving forward.
Yes, you’ll make mistakes. Yes, you’ll learn as you go. But that’s how every successful founder does it.
And you don’t have to do it alone—I’m here to share my knowledge, my 15+ years in the fashion industry, and my experience as a mom to make your path smoother.
